Fall Fashion Trends Fashion darling Philip Lim, who received rave reviews for his Spring 2007 collection presentation in New York last Sunday, believes in beautiful, fashionable clothes that are--believe or not--affordable. I don't think taste should be determined by price levels. It should be about the product." We couldn't agree more. That's why, in our fall fashion installment of Affordable Luxuries, we've unearthed the best deals for those seeking a Park Avenue look on a Park Slope budget. Nothing costs more than $200. Even when money is no object, there's always the thrill of the bargain--particularly a luxurious one. And in the new age of affordable designer clothing, when seemingly every label is scrambling to create on-trend pieces that also happen to be reasonably priced (see: Frugal Fashion), finding one is easier than ever. We've highlighted ten important looks for the season, including lots of layers, a riff on French nautical style and most notably, streamlined silhouettes, all with price tags that won't put you in the red. This autumn, leggings have also made a full-on comeback. Afraid of looking like a Flashdance extra? Add a few layers with some ankle boots and you're channeling Marc Jacobs' Fall 2006 runway instead. Try Wolford's "Velvet" legging at 66 denier--they're incredibly soft and semi-opaque (fine since you'll be wearing them under other things). Plus, they're priced at a startlingly affordable $38--if you can find any left, that is. Gloves are also popping up everywhere in elbow-length versions, pairing perfectly with the season's swing coat. Carolina Amato makes a supple leather version for $200, in a rainbow of colors that will not only keep your hands warm, but your pockets deep. Should your weekend wardrobe need a lift, try Lim's take on the classic white t-shirt--with puffed sleeves and a scooped neck, priced at $132. It looks great with a pair of Cheap Monday jeans, the premium denim line to invest in this season. Before September, the Swedish brand was available exclusively at downtown Manhattan boutique Opening Ceremony. But the genius buyers at Barneys scooped them up for autumn before followers of fashion could blink an eye. At $65 (compared to the $200-plus price tag for most designer denim), try to get your pair sooner than later--they're also destined to be a sell-out. For the fashion-conscious male, it's easy to update your work-to-weekend wardrobe with a few finishing touches. Start with a classic alligator belt from Brooks Brothers, throw on a skinny tie from arbiters of downtown style, Steven Alan, and you'll instantly sharpen your everyday suit's dulled edge. For lazier days, you'll require something that doesn't scream slovenly. A refined weekend look is easy with Gap )-owned Banana Republic's $148 navy-blue cashmere v-neck. The elbow patch detailing gives it something a bit extra. Even the ultimate loungewear--the sweatshirt--can go beyond casual, as it does with Rogues Gallery's Baffin style.
